Description: The CD117 (c-Kit) antigen is the cell-surface receptor for stem cell factor (SCF). Together these molecules constitute a ligand/receptor pair which functions to maintain normal hematopoiesis in the adult. Signaling through SCF/c-Kit has an important role in stimulating myeloid and erythroid production of primitive hematopoietic progenitor cells. A variety of cytokines act synergistically with SCF to stimulate proliferation and differentiation of bone marrow progenitor cells. For example, SCF plus IL-7 can stimulate the combined myeloid and B cell differentiation of uncommitted hematopoietic progenitor cells. SCF/c-Kit also participates in erythropoiesis in both the bone marrow and spleen. Loss-of-function mutations for SCF/c-Kit lead to a variety of pleiotropic developmental defects while gain-of-function mutations can lead to constitutive activation of the kit receptor and links to cancer. Examples of the former are mast cell deficiency and severe macrocytic anemia while the latter mutation has been identified in mastocytomas.

Description: Chicken Bu-1a, a product of the Bu-1a allele, is expressed on the cell surface as a disulfide-linked homodimer. In 10-week-old H.B15 and H.B2 chickens, Bu-1 is found on 85-90% of bursal cells, 2-8% of thymocytes, 15-27% of spleen cells, and 2-18% of peripheral blood cells. It is also expressed on subsets of macrophages and monocytes but not on granulocytes, erythrocytes, or thrombocytes. In chickens heterozygous for the Bu-1 alleles (Bu-1a/b), Bu-1a does not exhibit allelic exclusion. Description: Murine CD38, a type II transmembrane glycoprotein, is a bifunctional ectoenzyme capable of catabolizing nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) to cyclic ADP-ribose (cADPR), and then hydrolyzing cADPR to adenosine diphosphoribose (ADPR). It is expressed at high levels on the surface of peripheral B-lineage cells and at low density on germinal center B cells from unimmunized mice. It has also been reported to be expressed at moderate levels on NK cells, a proportion of peripheral T cells, and a subpopulation of thymocytes which are mostly TCRαβ+, CD4-, CD8-. Murine CD38 is also expressed by all Mac-1+ macrophages in the peritoneal cavities of unimmunized mice but not by unstimulated bone-marrow-derived macrophages. Monoclonal antibodies to CD38 have been shown to induce B and T cell proliferation, protect B cells from apoptosis, and inhibit B lymphopoiesis.

It is absent from pluripotent stem cells but appears on myelomonocytic precursors after CD34. It then continues to be expressed on both the myeloid and monocyte lineages. While it has been reported that CD33 can function as a sialic acid-dependent cell adhesion molecule, cells expressing CD33 require desialylation before they can bind cells bearing the appropriate sialoglycoconjugates.
