Description: CD55, also known as decay accelerating factor (DAF), is an 80 kDa GPI-anchored single chain glycoprotein that is expressed on all cells in contact with serum including all hematopoietic cells and the vascular endothelium. A soluble form of CD55 is present in plasma and body fluids. CD55 is a member of the regulator of complement activity (RCA) family of proteins and is thought to play a role in the protection of cells from damage by autologous complement by preventing the amplification steps of the complement cascade. CD55 expression increases upon T cell activation and antibodies to CD55 are mitogenic in the presence of phorbol esters.

Description: CD33 is a 67 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein and a member of the sialoadhesin family of cell surface receptors. It is absent from pluripotent stem cells but appears on myelomonocytic precursors after CD34. It then continues to be expressed on both the myeloid and monocyte lineages. While it has been reported that CD33 can function as a sialic acid-dependent cell adhesion molecule, cells expressing CD33 require desialylation before they can bind cells bearing the appropriate sialoglycoconjugates. This suggests that inhibitory cis interactions may regulate or block any adhesion function.

Description: Murine CD38, a type II transmembrane glycoprotein, is a bifunctional ectoenzyme capable of catabolizing nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) to cyclic ADP-ribose (cADPR), and then hydrolyzing cADPR to adenosine diphosphoribose (ADPR). It is expressed at high levels on the surface of peripheral B-lineage cells and at low density on germinal center B cells from unimmunized mice. It has also been reported to be expressed at moderate levels on NK cells, a proportion of peripheral T cells, and a subpopulation of thymocytes which are mostly TCRαβ+, CD4-, CD8-. Murine CD38 is also expressed by all Mac-1+ macrophages in the peritoneal cavities of unimmunized mice but not by unstimulated bone-marrow-derived macrophages. Monoclonal antibodies to CD38 have been shown to induce B and T cell proliferation, protect B cells from apoptosis, and inhibit B lymphopoiesis.

Description: The CD23 antigen is the low affinity IgE Fc receptor, which is a 45-49 kDa protein with 38 and 28 kDa fragments. It is expressed on most mature, conventional B cells (but not on peritoneal CD5+ B cells) and can also be found on the surface of T cells, macrophages and platelets. It is distinct from the high affinity IgE receptors found on basophils and mast cells which mediate allergic reactions. The low affinity receptors are thought to play a role in isotype specific immunoregulation. The regulation of CD23 surface expression appears to be integral with the complex IgE system which involves interactions of cells, cytokines, antibodies and regulatory factors. CD23 has been described as a “membrane bound cytokine," in that the soluble cleavage products of CD23 are themselves able to act as cytokines in vitro.
