Description: CD86 (B7-2) is an 80 kDa type I integral membrane protein and a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily of cell surface receptors. Along with CD80 (B7-1), CD86 participates in T cell costimulation via interaction with CD28 and CD152 (CTLA-4). It is expressed at very low density in normal tissues but is rapidly upregulated on stimulated B cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells. Since CD86 has rapid kinetics of induction, it is believed to be the major CD28 ligand expressed early in the immune response.

Description: Murine CD38, a type II transmembrane glycoprotein, is a bifunctional ectoenzyme capable of catabolizing nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) to cyclic ADP-ribose (cADPR) and then hydrolyzing cADPR to adenosine diphosphoribose (ADPR). It is expressed at high levels on the surface of peripheral B-lineage cells and at low density on germinal center B cells from unimmunized mice. It has also been reported to be expressed at moderate levels on NK cells, a proportion of peripheral T cells, and a subpopulation of thymocytes which are mostly TCRαβ+, CD4-, CD8-. Murine CD38 is also expressed by all Mac-1+ macrophages in the peritoneal cavities of unimmunized mice, but not by unstimulated bone-marrow-derived macrophages. Monoclonal antibodies to CD38 have been shown to induce B and T cell proliferation, protect B cells from apoptosis, and inhibit B lymphopoiesis.

Description: CD62E represents the 97 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein E-selectin, also known as endothelial-leukocyte adhesion molecule-1 (ELAM-1). It is expressed on cytokine-stimulated endothelium, weakly on unactivated endothelium, and is absent on leukocytes. Like other selectins, CD62E is an adhesion molecule that contributes to the initial attachment and rolling of leukocytes on endothelial surfaces, a prerequisite for leukocyte extravasation into tissues. CD62P is a 140 kDa membrane glycoprotein formerly known as platelet activation-dependent granule membrane protein (PADGEM) or GMP-140. It is expressed on platelets, megakaryocytes, and epithelium. Description: CD107a, also known as lysosomal-associated membrane protein 1 (LAMP-1), is a heavily glycosylated type I transmembrane protein that constitutes the major sialoglycoproteins on lysosomal membranes. It is a ligand for galaptin, an S-type lectin present in extracellular matrix, through its recognition of acetyllactosamine oligosaccharide chains, and is a ligand for E-selectin-mediated cell adhesion. CD107a is expressed by activated T cells, macrophages, dendritic cells, activated platelets, tonsillar epithelium, and some tumor cell lines, including U937 and KG1a. It is also a widely expressed intracellular antigen. LAMP-1 may function in protecting the inner surface of the lysosomal membrane by forming a barrier to lysosomal hydrolases. The upregulation of both CD107a and CD107b on the surface of tumor cell lines has been associated with their enhanced metastatic potential where they may increase adhesion to extracellular matrix and endothelium.

Description: CD24 is expressed in B cells until their terminal differentiation into plasma cells. It has been used widely as a marker to fractionate different B-lineage differentiation stages. CD24 has been found on a variety of other hematopoietic and neural cell types and is now classified as a costimulatory molecule. The CD24 molecule, also known as HSA, is composed mostly of carbohydrate with a protein core of only 31-35 amino acids in the human and 27 amino acids in the mouse. CD24 is now included in the large group of phosphatidylinositol-anchored membrane proteins. Studies with purified CD24 applied to latex beads have demonstrated a self-binding property suggesting that the molecule is capable of promoting homotypic aggregation, binding, and cell adhesion. Description: In the mouse, CD8 exists in two forms – (i) a CD8 heterodimer composed of an α chain (CD8α) and a β chain (CD8β); and (ii) a homodimer of two α chains. The heterodimer is found on the surface of essentially all thymocytes and the “suppressor/cytotoxic” subpopulation of mature T lymphocytes. Subsets of intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes express CD8α without CD8β.
