Activates protein kinase C and promotes skin tumors in mice.

PMA activates Ca2+ - ATPase and potentiates forskolin-induced cAMP formation. Used to inhibit apoptosis induced by the Fas antigen, but PMA induces apoptosis in HL-60 promyelocytic leukemia cells.

Very soluble in methanol, soluble in DMSO, chloroform, ethanol or acetone, ether, ethyl acetate, DMF or acetonitrile. Insoluble in water.
