Description: IGF-2 is a member of the insulin family of polypeptide growth factors that is involved in development and growth. It is an imprinted gene and is expressed only from the paternally inherited allele. It is a candidate gene for eating disorders. There is a read-through, INS-IGF2, which aligns to this gene at the 3' region and to the upstream INS gene at the 5' region. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been found for this gene.

Description: Retinol binding protein (RBP) 4 is the only specific transport protein for vitamin A in the circulation whose function is to deliver vitamin to target tissues (1). In obesity and type 2 diabetes, expression of Glut4 is significantly impaired in adipocytes. Glucose transport via Glut4 is the rate-limiting step for glucose use by muscle and adipose tissue (2). Yang et al. noted that adipocyte-specific deletion of Gluts led to notable elevation of RBP4 causing systemic insulin resistance, and that reduction of RBP4 improved insulin resistance (3). This identified a novel role of RBP4 in regulating insulin action and RBP4 is recorded as an adipocyte-derived hormone. Thus, measurement of serum or plasma RBP4 is a useful means for understanding of metabolic disorders.

Description: PMSG is a complex glycoprotein obtained from the serum of pregnant mares. This 43-63 kda protein is capable of supplementing and being substituted for the follicle stimulating gonadotrophin and interstitial cell-stimulating hormone of the anterior pituitary gland in both the male and female. Thus PMSG-Intervet stimulates development of the ovarian follicle in the female.

Description: Human Lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) is a glycoprotein with a molecular mass of approximately 58 kDa. It is the key enzyme responsible for esterification of free cholesterol to cholesteryl esters in circulating plasma lipoproteins, primarily in high density lipoprotein (HDL). The tertiary structure of LCAT is maintained by two disulfide bridges, similar to lipases and other proteins of the α/β hydrolase fold family. Mature LCAT protein is synthesized from a 440 residue precursor by following cleavage of a 24 residue signal peptide. The mature protein contains 416 amino acids and is heavily N-glycosylated. LCAT is abundant in blood plasma and it is present in other organs, including liver, brain and testes. In plasma LCAT is associated with ApoD which frequently co-purify.

Description: Cystatin C is a non-glycosilated basic single-chain protein consisting of 120 amino acids with a molecular weight of 13.36 kDa and is characterized by two disulfide bonds in the carboxy-terminal region. It belongs to the cystatins superfamilly which inactivates lysosomal cysteine proteinases, e.g. cathepsin B, H,.K, L and S. Imbalance between Cystatin C and cysteine proteinases is associated with inflammation, renal failure, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis and hereditary Cystatin C amyloid angiopathy. Its increased level has been found in patients with autoimune diseases, with colorectal tumors and in patients on dyalisis. Serum Cystatin C seems to be better marker of glomerular filtration rate than creatinine. On the other hand, low concentration of Cystatin C presents a risk factor for secondary cardiovascular events.

Description: Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are large complex carbohydrate molecules that interact with a wide variety of proteins involved in physiological and pathological processes. GAGs are also known as mucopolysaccharides due to their viscous, lubricating properties, as found in mucous secretions. GAGs are found on all animal cell surfaces in the extracellular matrix (ECM), and some are known to bind and regulate certain proteins, including chemokines, cytokines, growth factors, morphogens, enzymes and adhesion molecules.

GAGs are linear, sulphated, negatively charged polysaccharides that have molecular weights of approximately 10–100 kDa. GAGs can be divided into two main types. Non‐sulphated GAGs include hyaluronic acid (HA), whereas sulphated GAGs include chondroitin sulphate (CS), dermatan sulphate (DS), keratan sulphate (KS), heparin and heparan sulphate (HS).

GAGs play an important role in cell signaling and development, angiogenesis, axonal growth, tumour progression, metastasis and anti‐coagulation. Uncontrolled progenitor cell proliferation leads to malignant tissue transformation and cancer. GAGs and proteoglycans (PGs) are believed to play a critical role in cell proliferation, acting as co‐receptors for growth factors of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family.

PGs are composed of a core protein to which one or more GAG chains are covalently attached. Examples of large PGs are aggrecan, the major PG in cartilage, and versican, which is present in numerous adult tissues such as blood vessels and skin. PGs are known to have a variety of functions, dependent on type and in vivo location, and have important roles in invertebrate and vertebrate development, maintenance, and tissue repair. Many biologically potent small proteins can bind GAG chains as a major part of their function in the ECM, at the cell surface, and also in some intracellular locations. Thus, PGs have become a major focus in research on many diseases.
