Description: Magnesium sulfate is used as a colorant in dyes and red glazes for porcelain. As a trace essential element it is a nutritional factor for all animals; often a supplement in feed. It is used in biological assays to study the effects of manganese on the central nervous system, and to assess exposure limits.

Description: Amphotericin B is used as antifungal in cell culture media. Amphotericin B is a polyene antifungal, antibiotic from Streptomyces sp. It has a high affinity for sterols, primarily ergosterols, of fungal and bacterial cell membranes. It is an antibiotic solution effective against yeast and other fungi. Amphotericin B may be toxic to some insect cell types. Amphotericin B, is an antimycotic.

Description: 2,2-Azino-bis-(3-ethyl-benzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) has been used as a chromogenic substrate for horseradish peroxidase (HRP), both in general activity assays and in ELISA applications. Activity of HRP using ABTS appears about four-fold higher than using pyrogallol. It is mainly used as a substrate in sensitive peroxidase assays.
2,2′-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) is a peroxidase substrate suitable for use in ELISA procedures. This substrate produces a soluble end product that is green in color and can be read spectrophotometrically at 405 nm. The reaction may be stopped with 1% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Recommended for ELISA (microwell) procedures, not recommended for membrane applications.

Description: 2,2'-Azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic Acid) Solution is oxidized to a radical action showing absorption maxima at 820 nm, 734 nm, 650 nm and 405 nm, in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and HRP. The latter frequency demonstrates a significant molar extinction coefficient and is generally employed for most ABTS assays. Stopping the reaction with acid does not alter the 405 nm spectrum allowing kinetic and endpoint methods to be measured at the same wavelength. Provided as a room temperature stable, single component ABTS solution satisfactory for quantitative analysis of HRP based systems.

Description: Sodium selenite is commonly used as a source of selenium in biological research, where selenium is an essential trace element that is normally provided by serum. Selenium is present in selenoproteins such as glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase, which contain the selenium analog of cysteine, selenocysteine. In particular, glutathione peroxidase has a role in detoxification in vivo as a scavenger of peroxides. Sodium selenite is included in various medium supplements for use in cell culture. Sodium selenite has been utilized in studies of cell proliferation and cancer research. It has been used to alter gene expression in HepG2 cells as analyzed by cDNA microarrays. Sodium selenite can inhibit zinc finger protein/DNA interactions. Sodium selenite has been shown to alter mitochondrial membrane potentials and thus potentially contribute to apoptosis.

Description: The complement system provides innate defense against microbial infection and is a "complement" to antibody mediated immunity. The complement system consists of thirty-five interacting plasma and membrane associated proteins which contribute to host-defense and initiate and amplify inflammation, even in the preimmune state where specific antibodies and lymphocytes are not available. In addition to the complement components themselves, this system also contains several soluble factors that prevent spontaneous complement activation from occurring in solution, as well as, several regulatory membrane associated proteins that protect host cells from accidental complement attack. Cleavage of the C3 component by either the classical pathway or the alternative pathway releases C3a and C3b. C3a appears to be important in many inflammatory responses while the C3b fragment covalently binds to the cell or bacterial surface and plays a role in opsonisation. Binding of C3b to the C4b component of the C3 convertase, results in C5 convertase (C4b3b2a) formation.
