Description: CD33 is a 67 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein and a member of the sialoadhesin family of cell surface receptors. It is absent from pluripotent stem cells but appears on myelomonocytic precursors after CD34. It then continues to be expressed on both the myeloid and monocyte lineages. While it has been reported that CD33 can function as a sialic acid-dependent cell adhesion molecule, cells expressing CD33 require desialylation before they can bind cells bearing the appropriate sialoglycoconjugates. This suggests that inhibitory cis interactions may regulate or block any adhesion function.

Description: Porcine CD1 is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein and a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily of cell surface receptors. It has a domain organization similar to that of MHC class I molecules and is expressed in association with β2-microglobulin. CD1 is found on B cells, macrophages, and immature thymocytes. There is evidence for a role of CD1 in presentation of lipids and peptides to T cells.

Description: Glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP) is a member of the type III intermediate filament family of proteins. GFAP is heavily expressed in astrocytes and certain other astroglia in the central nervous system, in satellite cells in peripheral ganglia, and in non-myelinating Schwann cells in peripheral nerves. It is closely related to its non-epithelial family members, vimentin, desmin, and peripherin, which are all involved in the structure and functions of the cell’s cytoskeleton. GFAP is thought to help to maintain astrocyte mechanical strength, as well as the shape of cell; however, its precise function remains poorly understood. In adults, GFAP levels increase in response to the proliferation of astrocytes associated with Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis. Antibodies specific for GFAP are useful as markers of astrocytic cells and neural stem cells as well as for distinguishing neoplasms of astrocytic origin from other neoplasms in the central nervous system.

Description: CD45RA is a 220 kDa exon A-dependent isoform of CD45. It is expressed on 40-50% of CD4+ peripheral T cells, 50% of peripheral CD8+ T cells, and a portion of B lymphocytes and monocytes.

Description: CD5, also known as Lyt-1, is a monomeric type I transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on thymocytes, T lymphocytes, and a subset of B lymphocytes, but not on natural killer (NK) cells. It has been identified as the major ligand of the B-cell antigen CD72. The frequency of CD5+ B cells exhibits strain-dependent variation, and the phenotypic, anatomical, functional, developmental, and pathological characteristics of the CD5+ B cells suggest that they may represent a distinct lineage, known as B-1 cells. Binding of CD5 on the T cell surface can augment alloantigen- or mitogen-induced lymphocyte proliferation and induces increased cytosolic free calcium, IL-2 secretion, and IL-2R expression. It has been proposed that CD5 negatively regulates signal transduction mediated by the T-cell and B-cell receptors.

Description: CD45R, also known as B220, a member of the protein tyrosine phosphate family and a major cell surface glycoprotein, represents a restricted form of the CD45 family which primarily recognizes only cells of B-lineage from pro-B cell through mature B lymphocytes and prior to the availability of anti-CD19 monoclonal antibodies was commonly used as a pan B-cell marker. It also reacts with certain activated T cells as well as non-MHC-restricted lytically active lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells. In vivo administration of RA3-6B2 has been shown to affect differentiation of both T and B cells in normal mice and reduce the level of anti-DNA antibodies and lymphadenopathies in MRL/lpr mice.

Description: CD57 represents a 110 kDa oligosaccharide antigenic determinant present on a variety of polypeptides, lipids, and chondroitan sulfate proteoglycans. It is expressed on 7-35% of normal peripheral blood lymphocytes, including subsets of NK cells and CD8+ T lymphocytes. The carbohydrate is expressed on various cell adhesion molecules in the nervous system and is suggested to play a role in cell–cell and cell–substrate interactions.

Description: Bcl-xL is a 29 kDa member of the Bcl-2 family of proteins involved in regulation of programmed cell death, or apoptosis. It is found in both soluble and membrane fractions of cellular lysates. Like Bcl-2, Bcl-xL has been demonstrated to block apoptosis which is induced by a variety of stimuli and, under certain conditions, offers greater protection against apoptosis than Bcl-2. While formation of heterodimers with the apoptosis-enhancing protein, Bax does not block the apoptosis-suppressing property of Bcl-xL, heterodimerization with Bad effectively inhibits the protective function of Bcl-xL.

Description: CD18 represents the common β2 integrin subunit that associates non-covalently with the α/β chains of CD11a, CD11b, and CD11c to form various integrin heterodimers. It is expressed strongly on lymphocytes and monocytes and weakly on granulocytes. CD18 mediates a variety of heterotypic and homotypic intercellular adhesion reactions and it regulates the ligand-binding activates of the various CD11/CD18 complexes. The monoclonal antibody C71/16 has not been reported to inhibit cell adhesion.
