Description: CPEB1 is an RNA binding protein that contains an RNA-recognition motif and a zinc finger-containing region found in a wide range of vertebrates and invertebrates. CPEB1 forms the nucleus of a complex of factors that regulate poly(A) elongation and promotes polyadenylation-induced translation. CPEB1 mediates many diverse biological processes such as germ cell development, cell division and senescence, and synaptic plasticity. Recently, it was discovered that CPEB1 is involved in beta-catenin mRNA translation and cell migration in astrocytes as well as regulating hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1 expression, demonstrating the wide range of processes in which CPEB1 plays a role. At least four isoforms of CPEB1 are known to exist.

Description: The activity dependent neuroprotective protein (ADNP) gene is frequently amplified in many neoplasias, including breast, bladder, ovarian, pancreatic, and colon cancers. ADNP mRNA is abundantly expressed in distinct normal tissues, and high expression levels were encountered in malignant cells. ADNP is implicated in maintaining cell survival, perhaps through modulation of p53. The encoded protein contains one homeobox and nine zinc finger domains, suggesting that it functions as a transcription factor.

Description: The function of the protein encoded by this gene is not well defined, however it contains zinc finger motifs suggestive of a transcription factor. The protein (isoform 1) is localized to both the nucleus and cytoplasm. Three splice variant mRNAs products have been described [1]. The longer AIRE-1 mRNA appears to be more abundant and includes exons 1 through 14. Splice variant AIRE-2 includes a portion of the non-coding region of exon 1, an alternatively spliced longer exon 8, plus exons 9 through 14. Variant AIRE-3 includes the same exon 1-8-9 sequences as found in AIRE-2 but utilizes additional alternative splicing in exon 10 that shifts the reading frame such that a stop codon in exon 12 is utilized.

Description: Protein kinase C (PKC) zeta is a member of the PKC family of serine/threonine kinases which are involved in a variety of cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation and secretion. Unlike the classical PKC isoenzymes which are calcium-dependent, PKC zeta exhibits a kinase activity which is independent of calcium and diacylglycerol but not of phosphatidylserine. Furthermore, it is insensitive to typical PKC inhibitors and cannot be activated by phorbol ester. Unlike the classical PKC isoenzymes, it has only a single zinc finger module. These structural and biochemical properties indicate that the zeta subspecies is related to, but distinct from other isoenzymes of PKC. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008].
