Calcium ionophore is a commonly used Ionophone Antibiotic that increases intracellular Ca2+ in intact cells and forms stable 2:1 complexes with divalent cations.
- It acts as an uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation and inhibits mitochondrial ATPase activity.
- It can also induce Apototosis in mouse Lymphoma cell line S49.
- However, it is shown to block Apotosis in other systems such as when Interleukin-3 (IL-3) is withdrawn from IL-3 dependent cells.
- Supplied as dry powder.
