The mcKLH is maleimide-activated using a heterobifunctional crosslinker that contains an N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) ester and a maleimide group. The PEGylated mcKLH is activated with NHS-PEG₂-Maleimide, creating a more soluble maleimideactivated mcKLH. Maleimide groups react with free sulfhydryls, forming stable thioether bonds.
